Koblenz

Koblenz lies on the confluence of the Rhein and Mosel rivers and attracts many tourists as a starting point for a Rhein cruise. At the confluence you will find the Deutsche Eck, where only the base remains of a gigantic equestrian statue of Wilhelm I which once stood here. From here you can get a nice view of the town, the quarter on the right bank of the Rhein, dominated by the fortress Ehrenbreitstein which is lighted at night, the port and the Mosel bridges. Nearby is also the Kastorkirche, a Romanesque church which was built on the site where the Treaty of Verdun was drawn up in 843 AD dividing Charlemagne's Empire.

Ehrenbreitstein, located in a strategic position, was held by the archbishops of Trier until 1799 when it was destroyed by the French. Between 1816 and 1832 the Prussians, who had ruled the Rheinland from the time of the Treaty of Vienna in 1815, built the present powerful fortification (one of the largest in Europe). You must go to the very end of the stronghold on the left for a complete panoramic view.
