Near the town of Dahn, a country resort on the edge of the forest, is one of the most fascinating and beautiful castle complexes in Germany. To reach it, drive along the Schloßstraße to the base of the rocks and hike through the forest to reach the ruins (Burgruinen) of three separate castles (Altdahn, Grafendahn, Tanstein), all protected by the same perimeter wall. Made out of sandstone, partially chisselled into the mountain side, they are fun to explore: there are double walls, dangerously steep ladders and stair cases (at least in 1984) and great views of the Wasgau region.
