Marienburg, Niedersachsen

This romantic castle is situated on a hill near Nordstemmen along the River Leine. King Georg V. of Hannover had it built between 1857 and 1866 as a present to his queen Marie. The large four-winged structure was begun by Hannoverian architect Hase and finished by Erwin Oppler in 1864. The style is Neo-Gothic, mainly in shape but not in structure. It was meant to look like a romantic medieval castle.Today it is a museum with a lot of objects from Hannoverian kings and the Welfen.

The Marienburg was never completed. Ex-Queen Marie lived there for short time before she followed her husband into exile. The ducal familiy did not return till after 1945. Many wedding ceremonies are held in this romantic setting.
