HelmstedtBefore the unification of Germany Helmstedt was known primarily as a major border crossing to East Germany. It was a pleasant surprise to me, when we stopped here for lunch, that the town had some very beautiful Fachwerkhäuser, a nice looking Rathaus and a rustic castle with two Renaissance staircases.
