Near the villages of Münchenreuth and Waldsassen in NE Bavaria is the charming little church of Kappel, which stands isolated in a wide open pastoral setting near the Czech border. Constructed in 1689 by Georg Dientzenhofer in the shape of a trefoil rotunda, it is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. In the interior the three apses, each dedicated to one of the three Persons of the Trinity, radiate from a central triangular bay, resting on three columns. Three altar niches have also been hollowed out in each apse. The shape of the building along with the three "onion" towers give you an oriental impression.
Driving along the Czech border I was very surprised about the lack of guard towers (although you can see one on top of the hill), barbed-wire fences etc., which I had expected. The border was much more open than the "Iron Curtain" between East and West Germany (the photos were taken in 1984).
