Burghausen logo Burghausen

Burghausen is a charming little town along the left bank of the Salzach, which forms the Austrian/German border here. The town's square is lined with brightly colored houses and onion domed churches. Above the town is a fortification which is unique in Germany because of its lenght - over 1km. The castle became the property of the Dukes of Bavaria in the 12th century. They took advantage of its location and made it the biggest fortress in Germany. It reached its present size in about 1480. Early in the 16th cent. it was further reinforced because of the possible Turkish invasion. You get the best view from a viewpoint on the Austrian side.
