Kloster Maulbronn

Kloster Maulbronn, founded in 1147, is one of the earliest Cistercian monasteries in Germany. Since it became protestant during the Reformation, it escaped any Baroque transformations and thus preserved the Romanesque and early Gothic styles. The main abbey buildings are very well preserved and are enclosed , along with the other outbuildings, within a perimeter wall. The school which has been here since the Reformation (1556) counts Hölderlin and Hermann Hesse as two of many illustrious alumni. The large crucifix dates from 1473 and the delightful lavabo (Brunnenkapelle) from about 1350. The monastery is also listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
