Heidelberger Schloß

Heidelberg - Stadt Heidelberg - Altstadt Heidelberg - Vistas

The Heidelberger Schloß (195 m) is considered one of the finest examples of German Renaissance and certainly one of the most beautiful castle ruins. It was built primarily by the dukes Otto Heinrich (1556-59), Friedrich IV (1583-1610), and Friedrich V (1610-20). It has remained as a ruin since the destruction by the French in 1689 and 1693. Of particular note are the Otto-Heinrich wing (1566) (3rd row middle), the Friedrich's wing (1592-1610) 3rd & 4th row left, the Große Faß (1751, 2200 hl) in the cellar, and the great views from the terraces.
