Freudenstadt im SchwarzwaldFreudenstadt, located on the eastern edge of the Northern Black Forest, is known as a spa and a winter sport destination spot. Founded in 1599 by Duke Friedrich I of Württemberg for the miners of Christophstal (in part protestant refugees from Salzburg), the city was built like a chess board, but the inner core was totally destroyed during WW II. The reconstruction was done extremely well. In the city center is the huge market square, surrounded by houses with arcades. Freudenstadt has long been a favorite destination for tourists who will probably also enjoy the famous Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte at a local Konditorei (pastry shop).
