Until June 6, 1944, the name Omaha Beach only existed as an operational code name. Today it refers to the beaches of St. Laurent, Colleville and Vierville-sur-Mer in memory of the American soldiers of the 1st and 29th Infantry Divisions who landed east and west of Colleville and suffered great casualties in the D-Day battles. The American Military Cemetery is located near Colleville. 9385 Carrara marble crosses stand aligned in this impressive and moving site. For a non-participant of this invasion you should watch Steven Spielberg's The Saving of Private Ryan to really appreciate the horrors and sacrifices that took place on that fateful day. At the nearby Pointe du Hoc memorial one can better imagine what that day must have been like. Unfortunately I have only one image of Utah Beach.
