Jumièges

The abbey of Jumièges was founded in 654 and once housed 900 monks and 1500 servants. The main church dates from the 11th century and its consecration in 1067 was attended by William the Conqueror (Norman invasion of 1066) Architecturally you will find Romanesque and early Gothic features. When exploring the abbey I was not only struck by the beauty of these colossal ruins but also by the destruction caused by the French Revolution (the abbey was destroyed in 1790).
