Dieppe, about 60km north of Rouen, has the beach closest to Paris and is the oldest French seaside resort, popular with both Parisians and the English. Dieppe's passenger, fishing and commercial ports are interesting for their variety. The Castle, built in 1433 and changed numerous times over the centuries, is faced with alternate blocks of flint and sandstone and houses a noteworthy museum (unique collection of ivory carvings; sculptures, sea maps and mementoes of the composer Saint-Saens (1835-1921). On August 19, 1942, the unsuccessful Operation Jubilee was launched by Canadian commandoes with Dieppe as the primary objective.(bibliography)
