Laon

Laon, the capital of the Département Aisne, is best known for its splendid Gothic Cathédrale de Notre-Dame. In the Middle Ages Laon was the seat of bishops and the residence of the last Carolingian kings. Located about 50 km northwest of Reims between the Aisne and Oise rivers, it has a picturesque location. The cathedral was completed in 1235 and is an impressive example of the early Gothic style. Noteworthy details include the deep porches of the western façade (see below), the immense 13th century rose window in the apse representing the glorification of the Church, and the unusual gargoyles which pay tribute to the oxen used to haul the stones during the construction.
