Forest of Compiègne

South and East of the town of Compiègne are the old hunting grounds in the Forêt de Compiègne with ample space for walks and picnics beneath the beautiful oak and beech trees. North of the N31, the Charrière de l'Armistice marks the spot (see below) where the armistice ending World War I was signed on November11, 1918. (In the background is a statue of Marshall Foch) A replica of the train car where the ceremony took place now houses the Musée Wagon de l'Armistice. The original train car was again used by Hitler during WW II to humiliate the French when the French surrender was signed here on June 22, 1940.
