Aigues-Mortes

This perfectly preserved walled city in the salt marshes of the Petite Camargue is now marooned about 5 km from the sea. The once-important port has become a tourist attraction because of its imposing defenses. Aigues-Mortes (Place of Dead Waters) was established by Louis XI in the 13th century to consolidate his power on the Mediteranean, and was built according to a strict grid pattern.
