Alésia

Mont Auxois (418m), above the village of Alise-Ste-Reine, was the site of Caesar's final victory over the heroic Gaulic chieftain Vercingetorix in 52 BC after a six week siege. The first excavations were undertaken in the mid 19th century, and they uncovered the remains of a thriving Gallo-Roman town, Alésia, complete with a theater, forum and a well-laid-out street plan. The Musée Alésia has a collection of artifacts, jewelry and bronze figures from the site.

We encountered the helpless chicken when driving alongside a canal and noticed a little commotion going on at the roadside. A young girl came to the rescue of this floating chicken which had apparently tried to cross the canal - alas unsuccessfully.
