Nancy, Lorraine's historic capital, lies along the Canal du Marne and the Meurthe river and is known as the most beautiful example of baroque town planning in France. In the 18th century Stanislas Leczinski, Duke of Lorraine, former king of Poland, brought numerous artists to his court and gave the city its great Rokoko features. Nancy's principal and most renowned landmark is Place Stanislas (place Royal), laid out in 1752-60 by Emmanuel Héré. This elegantly proportioned square is enclosed by highly ornate gilded wrought-iron gates and railings, a hallmark of the city. Lining the square are pavillions, including the Hôtel de Ville and stylish restaurants.
