The largest castle in Alsace, built on the site where the Swabian Emperor Frederick of Hohenstaufen built a teutonic castle in 1114. Destroyed in 1462 by the upper Rhine cities and again in 1633 by the Swedes it later belonged to the city of Sélestat (Schlettstadt)[map] which gave it as a present to Emperor Wilhelm II, who had it rebuilt from 1901 to 1908. If offers a magnificent view of the Rhine valley below, including the village St. Hippolyte (map) On a clear day you can also see the Black Forest (Schwarzwald) directly to the east.
