Colmar, located about 40 miles south of Strassbourg, is the third largest city of Alsace and the capital of the Département Haut-Rhin. It is the birthplace of the painter Martin Schongauer (1445-1491) and home to the Unterlinden Museum, which houses the famous painting Isenheimer Altar (1515) by Matthias Grünewald. Many picturesque houses of the 16th and 17th century are still well preserved; particularly noteworthy are the Maison des Têtes (1609), also a very nice restaurant, and the Pfisterhaus (1537) in the Rue Mercière.
